Is Proton Therapy Treatment on the Rise?
After receiving this press release on Varian’s newest proton sale, we embarked on some research.
As ROS is in the business of selling used medical equipment, we discuss that Proton Therapy is seemingly on the decline, but from what we keep seeing – it seems that it is actually growing. While some centers are filing bankruptcy, there are even more centers opening, and those that do file for bankruptcy do not close — they just restructure. While the reimbursement does not make a quick ROI feasible, it doesn’t appear to hold back OEMs from selling to clinics with a high risk of defaulting on their payments.
Ten years ago there were only six proton centers in the United States. Now there are 31 sites with another nine centers anticipated to be clinical within the next 12 months. Internationally, there are 63 sites and another 36 going clinical by 2021.
