Multi-Leaf Collimators (MLC’s)
Looking for a multi-leaf collimator (MLC) to be used in conjunction with a linear accelerator (LINAC)? This technology is a must-have for up-to-date oncology care. At ROS, a variety of MLCs are available to improve your health care options for patients while also providing reliable accuracy that doctors can count on.
Since the early 1990’s, technological advancements have led to the addition of various components that have improved the precision, speed and targeting of tumors. The multi-leaf collimator (MLC) being one of them. An MLC is a device that is affixed to the collimator of the linear accelerator system. It contains several sets of metallic leaves, that when open and closed, can shape the beam of radiation as it exits the linear accelerator. They help to achieve the focused results that make linear accelerators an effective option for treating cancerous tumors. The MLC is applied to target the beams at only the cancer cells in order to spare surrounding normal tissue. They are particularly useful when treating patients using IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy).

At the time, the MLC was an alternative to beam-shaping blocks, which had to be applied manually and were an incredibly time-intensive step in the process of providing radiation therapy via LINACs. Because multi-leaf collimators are even more accurate and take a fraction of the time to apply in order to achieve the desired results, they quickly became part of the care regimen. Today, they continue to offer clinicians the ability to treat patients quicker and with greater accuracy.
Today, almost all LINACs sold come with factory-installed MLCs. However, some health care providers are struggling to treat patients with outdated equipment. A tested, pre-owned multi-leaf collimator is a great solution offered by Radiology Oncology Systems. With a refurbished MLC, you can enjoy the benefits of a new LINAC without having to replace your existing equipment. Or, you can replace an existing MLC that no longer functions as desired.
Replacements are relatively fast, and are usually completed with only 1-2 days of downtime. Most replacements are scheduled over a weekend in order to provide the least amount of disruption to patient care.
Several refurbished MLC options are available from Radiation Oncology Systems, including:
- Varian multi-leaf collimators:Clinac, 600C/D, 6EX, 2100C/D, 21EX, DHX, and iX linear accelerators, including Millennium 80MLC and Millennium 120MLC.
- Elekta multi-leaf collimators:Precise, Synergy Platform and Synergy Linear Accelerators, including MLCi 80 Leaf and Agility 160 Leaf
