In a historic milestone for health in the western region of Guatemala, Dr. Mariza Chan inaugurated the first radiotherapy center equipped with a linear accelerator. This technological advance represents a new era in cancer treatment for thousands of Guatemalans.

First-ever Refurbished Varian TrueBeam® is Installed in Latin America
The Varian TrueBeam® is one of the most widely used medical linear accelerator systems in the United States. Originally introduced in 2010, over 3,000 systems have been sold around the world. Every day, thousands of cancer patients around the world are being treated with this state-of-the-art equipment, capable of treating everything from skin tumors to brain tumors.
The first pre-owned TrueBeam® system ever to be installed in Latin America was recently completed, installed in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Of all the Caribbean and Central American countries, the D.R. boasts some of the most advanced cancer treatment centers. The technology used to fight cancer in this country has grown rapidly over the past several years. Like the TrueBeam®, many of the machines operating in the country now have ConeBeam CT and Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT) capabilities, two of the more advanced imaging techniques used in radiation therapy.
Dr. Federico Alvarez, ROS’s medical director of sales in the region, consulted on the project. “Our country, the Dominican Republic, was the first country in Latin America to install a Varian Unique linear accelerator. Now it is also the first country in Latin America to install a pre-owned TrueBeam® system. The Cancer League Hospital treats many of the poor and needy patients, and we were able to get them a state-of-the-art machine at an affordable prlce. We at ROS are very proud of the work we have done here, and we have much more work to do in our fight to help cancer fighting equipment to areas of need.”
