Hibachi to Treatment: Converting a Texas Restaurant into a World-Class Radiation Oncology Center

Imagine your long-standing, local Japanese eatery is suddenly transformed into a state-of-the-art oncology treatment center? This is exactly what happened in the heart of Corpus Christi, TX. Corpus Christi Urology Group and Cancer Center (CCUG) seized the opportunity to think outside the box and come up with a creative solution to serve the needs of their community. The result is the development of an outpatient radiation oncology center to help cancer patients by allowing a convenient, accessible location for their daily therapy.

Now…suddenly may be a matter of perspective! It takes a great deal of planning, research, preparation, and choosing the right partners to transform any space – let alone a dining facility – into a comfortable, professional, safe cancer treatment center. The renovations were extensive; the site used only the four outside walls and essentially transformed the entire interior. They also added on to the existing structure, adding a linear accelerator vault to the back of the building. Between planning and construction, the project took nearly one-and-a-half years.

CCUG’s new vault now houses a Varian linear accelerator with Rapid Arc, on-Board Imaging (OBI), Cone Beam CT (CBCT), Millennium 120 Multi-Leaf Collimator (MLC), E-Arm Portal Vision, and other advanced technologies. It can output 6&18 MV Photon Energies and 6-22 MeV Electron Energies for patient treatment.
