OncoServ announces the installation of the first GyroKnife radiotherapy system in North and South America.
OncoServ is pleased to announce the opening of its new comprehensive radiation therapy center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The new state-of-the-art cancer center includes the GyroKnife system, an all-new system with cutting-edge technology to treat tumors of the brain, spine, and other delicate areas throughout the body. It uses 30 cobalt sources instead of the more common external-beam radiation, and is the preferred method of treating brain tumors by many neurosurgeons. The GyroKnife allows treatment of tumors in only one to three fractions, unlike conventional treatments than can take over a month.
“We are very proud to feature the very first GyroKnife system, not just in our country, but in all of North and South America,” commented Dr. Luis Coronado, the CEO of OncoServ. “We believe that this new technology will bring patients to our clinic and to our beautiful country from all over the world.”
The center also features the new Varian Unique linear accelerator featuring Rapid Arc. “The Unique with Rapid Arc is truly an amazing machine and can treat a large volume of patients very quickly and very precisely. We felt it was important to have a machine like this in our new center,” he stated.
The center is located in Santo Domingo, less than an hour’s drive from the beautiful, white sand beaches of the Dominican Republic that draw tourism from all over the world.
Dr. Luis Coronado will be attending the 54th annual meeting of ASTRO at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, and is available to answer any questions about GyroKnife. He will be in the exhibit hall on October 28 and 29 at the booth of Radiology Oncology Systems, Inc., (booth #10049).
