Event Spotlight: ASTRO 2011 - Miami, FL
weekend in October. ROS was represented in full force this year and casted a wide net. Just like
the warm Miami Beach weather, plenty of opportunities were heating up as we received a near record
number of leads.
Other notable events during ASTRO 2011 were
a few industry shake-ups. Elekta has completed
the acquisition of Nucletron and they were showing
off their combined power going toe-to-toe with
for the HDR market. Tomotherapy and Accuray’s
merger is underway. Rumor has it the two companies
are struggling to integrate, but will not doubt be a
formidable threat to the specialty treatment arena. The buzz around Proton therapy has seemed to
stabilize as the market matures and the number of orders level. The dominate player is still IBA. They
released their first image guided proton therapy machine which uses a x-ray KV imager to target the
tumor prior to treatment delivery. On the new technology front, intra-operative radiation therapy seems
to be gaining traction. There are now three players; Intra-Op (the Mobetron), New Radiant Technologies
and Axxel (formerly Xoft). With a tail wind blowing from the reimbursement gurus, these technologies
are sure to add to the fight cure cancer.
Although shorter by a day, ASTRO was a success. We will be back at it again next year when
the annual event returns to Boston, MA. Thanks to everyone who attended from the ROS
team and a special thanks to those on the planning committees that made this year’s ASTRO
a huge success!
