ROS Installs First Linear Accelerator in Ica, Peru
Ica, Peru is a city located in the state of the same name (the Department of Ica), about 200 miles south of the nation’s capital Lima. It is the site of some of the oldest civilizations in the world, including the Inca Empire, and is rich with anthropological, historical, and geographical wonders such as the Nazca Lines geoglyphs and Paracas National Reserve. Today, the Department of Ica is home to about 900,000 people across 825,000 square miles of mostly arid desert.
ROS is proud to announce the commencement of installation of a Varian iX-Silhouette in Ica, which is now the first and only linear accelerator in the region. With the nearest linear accelerators and radiology oncology clinics located in Lima before this project, access to modern cancer treatment has been very limited. Few could afford the time and resources necessary to travel the 200 miles to and from the capital, and according to the World Health Organization, radiotherapy is generally not available in the public health system in Peru as a whole. This means that this new linear accelerator will have a very tangible impact on local communities and will bring life-saving, modern cancer treatment to thousands of people. The patients, clinic, surrounding hospitals, and the team here at ROS are extremely excited for this system to get up and running! We are proud to be a part of the global fight to end cancer.
If your facility is considering removal of a Linear Accelerator, we ask you not to scrap it – recycle it and help others in need!
